Early Developmental Screening and Intervention (EDSI)

Leila Espinosa is currently a policy analyst at the Center and working with the Early Developmental Screening and Intervention (EDSI) project, funded by First 5 LA. She is researching current practices and policies in developmental screening in various care settings. Prior to this project, she also served as a technical assistance coach for the First 5 California statewide evaluation.  She provided assistance directly to First 5 staff in San Bernardino, Riverside, Imperial, and Santa Barbara counties, offering training and guidance toward implementing state evaluation efforts.  Prior to joining the Center, Espinosa served as a Senior Analyst at the Consortium on Reading Excellence (CORE) located in Emeryville, CA.  While there, she worked on issues of school reform and education policy, specifically with a school reform model that focuses on improving the knowledge and skills of teachers in teaching literacy and math.  She coordinated the organization’s research and evaluation efforts, leading program evaluations of school-based literacy initiatives, observing classrooms, and surveying teachers in their practice.  She also trained teachers in conducting curriculum-based assessments and understanding assessment data for monitoring student progress.   She has also worked in admissions at the University of California Berkeley, evaluating freshman applicants to the university. She has also worked on various research projects in the areas of health care and community building while interning with the San Francisco Board of Supervisors and the Los Angeles City Council.  She earned a bachelor’s degree in Anthropology at UCLA and her master’s degree in Public Policy with a concentration in education policy at the UCLA School of Public Affairs in 1998.
